Juneteenth

Two Towns of Jasper

On April 11th 2026, Fayette Together is co-sponsoring a powerful upcoming community event, a public screening and discussion of the acclaimed documentary Two Towns of Jasper. We believe this film can serve as a meaningful catalyst for dialogue in our own community

This groundbreaking film explores the aftermath of the 1998 murder of James Byrd Jr. in Jasper, Texas—one of the most brutal hate crimes in recent U.S. history.

The movie, Two Towns of Jasper, is a powerful documentary that explores the tragic, racially motivated murder of James Byrd Jr. in Jasper, Texas, in 1998. The film uses an innovative approach: two documentary crews—one Black, one white—filmed in parallel, capturing different community perspectives and inviting honest reflection on race, justice, and reconciliation. It prompts us to think about how race shapes the way we experience events, history, and life in America.

Though the events took place over 25 years ago, issues of racial injustice, division, and systemic bias are still very present today.

This is an opportunity for us, as a community, to watch together, reflect together, and talk openly about hard but necessary topics. The goal is not blame or shame — it is learning, listening, and growing toward greater understanding and compassion.

Through this showing and discussion, we hope to Foster honest dialogue about race, justice and violence in our society. Build empathy by seeing and hearing diverse perspectives and discovering shared values. And reflect together on how justice and healing can grow within our own community. Identify steps we can take—individually and collectively—to build a more inclusive and equitable community.

Please join us for the public screening and discussion of the acclaimed documentary, Two Towns of Jasper, April 11th at 11:30am at the 4thfloor of the Inman Student & Community Center on the CMU Campus. Heavy refreshments will be served. FREE and open to all. RSVP, if possible, to: luelockridgelane@yahoo.com.

This event is sponsored by Fayette Together, Central Methodist University, The United Methodist Church and The Center for Faith and Service.
